DESCRIPTION:
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) has aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS is a worldwide system with a standard (1) set of rules for classifying hazardous products, (2) rules for labels, and (3) a format for safety data sheets (SDSs). As of December 1, 2018, there must be WHMIS 2015 labels and safety data sheets for all hazardous products in the workplace.
It is an employee’s responsibility to participate in WHMIS safety training, take necessary measures to protect themselves and co-workers, and properly identify and control hazardous materials. The onus is on the employer to ensure that hazardous materials are properly labelled, to have SDSs available, and to offer education and training about the products in the workplace.
This course familiarizes you with the WHMIS 2015 system and how it is used in workplaces. Currently only available in English.

Get StartedUnderstand WHMIS 2015 and GHS
In 2015, Canada revised its WHMIS program and adopted the Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). You will be familiarized with both WHMIS 2015 and the GHS to better understand their importance in the workplace.
Recognize pictograms and understand the hazards they identify
Pictograms are used to show the type of hazard a product present. Hazards that are expanded on include physical hazards, physical and health hazards, health hazards, and other hazards. Learn the classes, example products, and tips to minimize harmful effects, for each hazard pictogram.
Identify the hazards linked to each class
Every material you encounter in the workplace is put into a group, category, and class. This set of classifications provides the insight to know what hazards and risks to expect from the material. Learn how to identify the hazards that are related to each class.
Understand labels
Know how to properly identify, read, and understand product labels. Product labels are specifically designed to be the first source of information for hazards, safety precautions, and correct use of a product.
Understand the proper use of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
You will be provided with detailed explanations of how to properly read and understand Safety Data Sheets. Safety Data Sheets are summary documents that give you more information than the label about hazards of a product as well as safety precautions.
Each lesson has multiple click-through slides that can be viewed at your own pace and include both images and text learning pieces.
