Dye Carpet and Upholstery

The interior carpet and upholstery surfaces can lose their colour, contain unremovable stains, or simply need a refresh. In each case scenario, carpet dyes are used to correct or restore the issue. The carpet and upholstery areas that are dyed are left with a restored appearance.

Carpet, vinyl, and plastic dyes are available in various colours, matched to O.E.M. colouring standards. The dyes are specially formulated to leave the carpet soft and flexible, with a permanent coating that will not crack, split, peel, or rub off.

The time to dye the carpet and upholstery is dependent on the interior surface area of the vehicle, and the amount of carpet and upholstery areas where the dye is to be applied. Once the carpet and upholstery are dyed, the areas will be left soft and flexible and contain a permanent coating that will not crack, split, peel, or rub off.

Safety supplies include goggles, an apron, and impervious gloves. View the products used tab for Auto Valet products and accessories relating to this detailing task.

Directions

STEP 1: PREPARE THE AREAS OF APPLICATION

Ensure the areas of application are thoroughly cleaned and dry; free of silicone, dirt, debris, and grime. Protect adjacent surfaces from overspray; use plastic seat covers, steering wheel covers, and carpet adhesive film where needed.

STEP 2: APPLY THE CARPET DYE

Shake the carpet dye aerosol well before and during use; shake for 2 minutes, after the ball within the aerosol begins to rattle. Repeat this step for 10 seconds after each minute of use. Spray the carpet dye aerosol 10 to 25 cm (4 to 10 inches) from the area of application, in a sweeping motion. Avoid runs and drips by applying several light coats. Allow at least 5 minutes between coats, if required.

STEP 3: REVIEW YOUR WORK

Review work. If necessary, reapply the carpet dye to the areas of application, repeating step 2. After using the aerosol, clean-spray the valve. To clean, turn the aerosol upside down and spray until clear.

Tips

  • If the carpet dye aerosol spray button becomes clogged, pull it off and clean it. Do not stick pins or wire into the can opening. Replace the spray button with the valve opening pointing away from you.
  • Test spray in an inconspicuous area or scrap piece of material to verify compatibility.
  • If the incorrect dye colour is applied, use a solvent-based cleaner (SUPER SOL or OUST) to remove the dye as soon as possible, before the dye cures. Ensure the areas of application are fully dry before applying the correct colour.
  • Use at room temperature (20°C) for best results.
  • Be sure to carefully read and follow all product instructions and precautions, on the product labels.
