Undercoating

The underside of a vehicle is exposed to dirt, debris, road salt, and other harsh substances. Over time these substances penetrate into small access areas, causing damage. Undercoating is designed to prevent rust and corrosion by stopping leaks and sealing out moisture on the underside of vehicles. It also acts as a protective barrier against the accumulation of dirt and debris.

Undercoating can be applied to either new or used vehicles as a protective layer. However, it is easiest and best to apply to new vehicles. When applying to used vehicles, ensure areas are precleaned, and rust and corrosion are treated as necessary before undercoating application.

GATOR SKIN is a rubberized undercoating spray that quickly seals cracks and patches, and lasts for years. GATOR SKIN dries to the touch in one hour to a wrinkled, jet black colour. Once dried, the GATOR SKIN undercoating can be painted using a solvent-based enamel. As a flexible coating, GATOR SKIN also deadens sound and reduces noise.

The time to apply the undercoating is dependent on the total surface area of the vehicle underside, and the intensity and amount of product required. Once undercoating is applied, the areas of application will contain a wrinkled, jet black, flexible coating that stops leaks and seals out moisture. After the undercoating has been applied, a solvent-based enamel colour of choice can be applied to the areas of application.

Safety supplies include goggles, an apron, rubber boots, and impervious gloves. View the products used tab for Auto Valet products and accessories relating to this detailing task.

Directions

STEP 1: PREPARE THE AREAS OF APPLICATION

Preclean the areas of application to ensure dirt, rust, and grease is removed. Use a cleaner degreaser, such as PURPLE POWER or D’LIMOKLEEN PLUS, at the correct dilution ratio to best remove all of the surface contaminants.

STEP 2: APPLY THE UNDERCOATING

Shake the GATOR SKIN aerosol container well before use. Hold the aerosol can 30 cm (12 inches) from the area of application. Spray a thin even coat of the undercoating, GATOR SKIN, building up the areas of application until desired thickness is achieved.

STEP 3: REMOVE OVERSPRAY AND REVIEW YOUR WORK

Use a SUPER SOL dampened cloth to remove the overspray. Review work. If necessary, repeat steps 2 to 3, to cover areas with undercoating at the desired thickness. GATOR SKIN is dry to the touch in one hour to a wrinkled, jet black colour. Once dry, paint over the area with a solvent-based enamel to the colour of choice

Tips

  • Once applied GATOR SKIN is dry to the touch in one hour to a jet black colour. It can then be painted with a solvent-based enamel to the colour of choice.
  • To prevent clogging of the aerosol tip, turn the can upside down and depress the aerosol tip for 2 seconds periodically, then wipe the aerosol tip clean.
  • Be sure to carefully read and follow all product instructions and precautions, on the product labels.
